[mythtv-users] a frustrating problem with sound

Hi,
I've been having a problem with sound in mythtv,
I've beaten my head against the wall and I'm looking
for some help.
I'm running gentoo 2.6.11, alsa, SBLive,
WinTV(bttv), mythbackend starts on bootup and that
seems to be working ok. When I load up X and start
the front end, watching TV only produces sound from
one channel. To be more specific: when the front end
connects to the backend and starts playing back live
TV, the backend kicks the sound on (line in on
alsamixer) and I can hear the output from the TV card
on the right speaker. This is the playback monitor
from line in, but it's only outputing the right
speaker. If I mute the playback of line in and raise
the volume on AC97 I get the sound out of the right
speaker again, this time with the frontend playback.
I've tried messing with all the alsamixer controls in
both playback and record.

I made sure that it wasn't a sound card problem, I put
a CD player on the line in and it comes out correctly
on both left and right channels, I also hooked up the
output from the TV card to my stereo while myth was
running and it also it outputing both channels.

No matter what I do I can't get it to output correctly
to both channels. If I run tvtime, it works correctly
and outputs sound on both left and right channels.

I tried using my onboard SiS audio (snd-intel8x0) it
behaves similarly, output on right channel only when
monitoring the line in playback. If I try watching
TV, it gives an error about not being able to get to
/dev/mixer (even though it's there).

I've tried everything I can think of to make sure it's
not a hardware problem and I'm sure it's not. All
other sound in the system works correctly, mp3's other
TV programs, ect.

Anyone have an idea what to do?

Thanks,
Derek
