[mythtv-users] Slightly OT: Recommendation for USB to Serial convertor

I don't believe you can use a USB-Serial converter with LIRC (I'm in
the same boat as you.) From what I can tell, LIRC has a seperate
driver that replaces the kernel driver for the port it runs on and
that driver, AFAICT doesn't support usb adapters.

Now the question I have is if this is true for the Irman. AFAIK, with
the Irman, much of the signal processing is done on the
microcontroller, and as such, lirc uses a symlink to /dev/ttyS0 for
/dev/lirc rather than it's standard character device. This seems to
imply that the standard kernel serial driver is being used, and thus
might work with a usb converter.

An alternative would be to buy or build a usb ir reciever, which is
what I'm about to attempt with the usb-ir-boy. Let me know how it
goes getting a serial adapter to work.
