Sounds like Myth is accessing the XML theme info/images (which it seems 
to do to allow changing the theme without restarting Myth).  Have you 
tried putting these on a tmpfs?  ( probably all of 
/usr/local/share/mythtv/ but you can "trim" out themes you're not using)
