You burn the programs straightaway after removing commercials, don't
you? I re-encode my recordings to get following effects:
1) Encoded files are smaller (i get 3-4 movies per DVD)
2) I can encode sound in AC3 format.

I encode using mecoder. If you are interested and willing to spend
time in encoding, I can send you my scripts.

I don't think there is a way to get AC3 sound straight-away from PVR-x50 cards.
