I built one a while ago, too, but it was not reliable.  I'm not sure 
if it was the homebrew circuit or lirc, but it would miss digits. 
What I posted earlier about the MyBlaster doesn't even use lirc, so it 
takes out that possible source of errors.  I find it rock-solid on my 
DISH box, which I cannot say for a homebrew.  Sure, the homebrew only 
cost $6 or so, but it definitely was not worth it.

Just my $0.02.
