Just keep in mind that the cygwin emulation layer is going to add some
overhead.  It may not be noticable unless trying to, say, run some
blender renderings while watching tv....

If you have cygwin, you have a full build environment (or should). 
Just get all the development tools and libraries needed (check myth
dependancies).  I'd do this myself, but cygwin makes me mad... I use
MSYS on my winders box....
