hmmm throw your /etc/modules.conf file into this email... i'd like to
see if the alsa section is setup properly... the autodetect could have
failed and bungled it

also, did you try the dsp output thing:
echo "this is some random text to make beeping sounds" > /dev/dsp
or
cat /etc/modules.conf > /dev/dsp

these command should just send random bytes to your sound processor
and if everything is fine, it will make some nice
snapping/popping/humming/chirping sounds
