I had this problem with mplayer too, interestingly, when I used the X11
driver (-vo X11) it worked correctly but when I used xv (-vo xv) it did
what you are describing. Anyhow, the solution (for me anyway) was adding
"-monitoraspect 16:9" to the mplayer command line. [assuming you have a
16:9 tv]

Not sure about xine.
