You're right, it is highly subjective. All that I
know is that my GeForce 4 440MX card gives pretty bad
TV-Out quality, and that my PVR-350 gives me almost
TV-quality. My GeForce card is one the cheaper ones,
and might not have a high quality TV-Out component.
My XBox gives TV-Out quality almost as good as the
PVR-350 (and much better than the GeForce 4 card), but
the XBox has some annoying issues of it's own. I'd
say that the XBox having good TV-Out is due to the
Conexant 25871 chip used in it, whereas my GeForce 4
card has the NV18 chip (according to the Xorg logs).
The test for me, is can I watch CNN with a ticker on
my TV without the picture jerking on me? With the
GeForce 4 card, the answer is no. With the XBox, the
answer is mostly, and with the PVR-350, the answer is
yes. CNN isn't what I watch most of, but the results
can be correlated to sports events (I'm a huge
baseball fan), and I was watching a baseball game on
the GeForce 4 card, and getting a headache from the
jerkiness of the motion.
Losing MythGame was a big downside of using the
PVR-350, but I'm finding that with the way things are
going at work, I don't have much time for gaming right
now anyway. DVD playback is fine with the PVR-350,
although I have an Athlon XP 2400+, and I don't notice
the dropped frames that Xine is mentioning.
