OK, major progress here, but still a problem.  When I try to change the
channel with ptune.pl I get a segmentation fault.  ptune-ui.pl doesn't
error out but does not change the channel.  I now know this thanks to the
above suggestion.  I bypassed the cable box and I get channel 4 clear as a
bell.  After changing the channel with ptune-ui.pl I still get channel 4. 
I am really close now, I just need to get rid of the segmentatin fault so
I can change to channel 3 and go back through the cable box.
