I had exactly the same problem before my cable company upgraded the
firmware on my cable box.  But don't worry, you can make it work.

I bet your cable box requires to you press "OK" (Enter/Return) after
entering the channel number.  If you just press the channel numbers
without pressing "OK" using the _remote_, then I bet you see the same
results.  Right?

It's any easy fix.  In the changechannel.py script, add this line:

  send_to_unit(serCon, SELECT_OK)

the second line from the bottom, right above the line:
  send_to_unit(serCon, EXIT_KEY)

I contacted the author of the dct-channel C program, who was kind enough
to write a patch for that program too.  If you're interested (and it's
not already in the standard distro), I can send it to you.
