You need a window manager.  Start it from .xinitrc.  I have this in my
.xinitrc:
  xterm &
  mythfrontend &
  exec sawfish
That way I can restart the mythfrontend process without quitting X.

sawfish.  Force of habit.  :)

Same as you: init runs 'su mythtv startx'
