Thanks guys, that of course seems to do it for me.  Sorry I missed it in 
the archives.  I went ahead and just removed those options (APIC, ACPI) 
from my .config file and recompiled 2.4.22-gentoo-r7, and all seems 
well.  I suppose I could've tried those kernel options first too, but I 
didn't have them before I started the recompile.
