I do not seem to be able to do the 

# /sbin/modprobe lirc_dev
modprobe: Can't locate module lirc_dev
# /sbin/modprobe lirc_i2c
modprobe: Can't locate module lirc_i2c

parts of Jarod's guide. Errors included.
