[mythtv-users] mythbackend locks after/before scheduled recordings

Hello all. So far i'm 70% pleased with my install of MythTV. 2 more bugs
to work out and I should be all set. (Until my second decoder card
arrives.) Here's what I need some assistance on...
1) This one isn't too bad, just an annoyance really, and has to deal with
my sound driver. I'm using Fedora Core and have the defaul drivers in and
using kmix. I tried to install ALSA but it just would work for me for some
reason, so I went back. When I restart and boot up mythfrontend I get a
black screen. (Trying to get this set to be used as a stand-alone,
auto-login and startup.) I read about the problems with the sound and mixer
issues and that these do cause the black screen. Output show something
about taking too long to connect and such. I've finally found that going
into kmix and resetting the line-out settings as described in the install
guide fixes this just fine. I've saved those settings as default, but they
refuse to load on a reboot without my assistance. How do I get these to set
at startup with a script, if at all possible?
2) When I have multiple scheduled programs I usually get one recorded fine.
The backend is still up and running and mythweb is responsive. It seems
that when the second recording is to start that it freezes on me. I went to
check mythweb from work and got nothing. Logging into my box and issuing a
"/sbin/services mythbackend restart" fixes the problem and it starts to
record the show if it happens to be in the middle of it's scheduled
recording. I installed the new firmware for IVTV and that took care of a
few bugs I had earlier on, but not this one.
If there really isn't a proper fix for this, how would I go about checking
mythweb for responsiveness, and issuing a restart command if it fails? Is
there something I could add to my crontab to do this every 5 minutes or so?
(A check, not a service restart) Or do I need a third party
service-checking app? Thanks a ton for any info you may have...
