You might want to try plugging the cable directly into your tuner instead 
of using the CATV brick - if you're not getting any encrypted channels the 
extended tuning range of most tv cards can usually pick the signal up off 
the cable.  What'd be really cool would be to have a brute-force decrypter 
plugin for myth ;)

I use a sky box and a LIRC homebrew IR transmitter to control it - the 
sky boxes are very picky about the IR timings, but once set up it's 
reliable (have a look in the projects section of my website for a LIRC 
config file with the right timings in it).
