Thanks for the info on the USB connection, Gert.  I don't know why I 
didn't realize that!  I'll just go all USB then.  I'll put together a 
parts list tonight and order everything tomorrow.  Hopefully, I'll have 
some pictures and good news to report in the next few days.  I think I"m 
going with the UIRT2 RAW protocol for the IR side.  Does anyone have any 
preferences on what to emulate on the LCD side?  I took a look at 
pic-an-lcd and it would be simple, but the LIRC driver doesn't include 
keypad support for it.  The keypad will be attached to the 
microcontroller, so key presses will return data across the USB connection.
