My intuition tells me it's electrical, maybe
that it's still tri-state for some reason.  Can you
put it on the scope?  If memory serves, there
are 4 parallel port modes, simplex, bidirectional,
ECP and EPP.  It may be that your desktop PC can
do all 4 but the Pundit thinks that nobody ever
uses simplex any more.  I'd look it up in the
kernel source code, but I'm a bit laid up with
the flu.  Maybe when I'm feeling a bit better I'll
go look it up for you.
