Daren,
you could use a different aproach:
1) choose one existing remote, maybe the one with the most buttons
2) train lirc with it
3) get a infrared output device (see other posts on this list)
4) have lirc record the signals from the other remotes
5) and configure the infrared output to play the signals back to the other
devices
That way you get a hyperintelligent remote with memory for every other remote
control that has ever existed :-)
Due to infrared reflection on e. g. walls you don't have to care much about
"illuminating" the other devices with the infrared output device.
