I also find that a serious disadvantage to the nvidia cards
sometimes... especially now with my homebrew TVout hardware that requires it.

This is not the case. Some cards do not have the hardware to do it
(perhaps nvidia... not sure if it's hardware or driver). Often it's the
driver, not X. Matrox cards have historically been quite simply the best at
quality and support under linux (I personally got a 1368x1024 interlaced
*framebuffer* console with custom "modeline" with Sun fonts for a
fixed-frequency workstation monitor by using a matrox card). I'm now using an
ATI Rage128 for my tvout-via-interlaced-vga, since it's new enough to have Xv,
but can still do interlaced.
It's not an X thing. Add 'interlace' to the end of a modeline (if the
monitor frequencies are within range), and it will work with supported
card/driver.
