Probably along the right line.
I had a similar performance problem that was due to the system using software based sound
rather that the hardware based sound. Check that your sound system is doing the right thing
by playing some music (cd etc) and watching the CPU percentage.

  I have DVB-T running on a Abit IC7-G, P4 2.4C, 512Mhz Ram, 120Gb IDE HD - not a slow system by any means. When I added a SATA HD, the picture started to break up (continuous errors in the DVB TS stream). The CPU usage was at 10% so that wasn't the problem.

  After a lot of prodding, I fixed it by disabling  the onboard sound (I have an M-Audio Rev 7.1) and the onboard firewire. I don't know the exact problem that it fixed, but it's been working fine ever since, now with 3 SATA drives. If anyone knows, I'd like to know.
