BTW, I'm having a very similar problem, but I have the nvidia
proprietary driver on the main head and the nv open source driver on
the second head on which I usually run Myth.

cvs update -dP -D '20 Jul' solves the problem for me, which suggests
this was a problem introduced only recently.  Can you check to see if
the July 20 snapshot solves your problem, too?  I was going to look
into it this weekend since none of the regular developers seem to be
having this problem, and it would be a useful data point to know if
these are slightly-differing symptoms of the same problem.
