OK.  More information about the problem.   Running the perl script in debug
mode I get something like this when I press a button:

undefined key:09 for

Eating key 09
Eating key 09



It looks as if what should be displayed for "device" is blank.  Anybody
else running into this?
The only thing I did different from the original instructions is I skipped
the mknod line to create the remote device.  I'm running Gentoo with devfs,
and the devices are created automatically when I load the module.
