The .rh9.at is a designator, that is fine. Did you do
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
before updating the kernel?

This is correct. You should do it just like Jarod says.

When do you get the message, and can you give us the message so we can get
a better idea of what it is.
I did my install via Jarod's site and I skipped the Alsa driver without any
problems. My sound works great with a SoundBlaster Live.
