Don't take this the wrong way, but selling Linux HTPC's is not a good
market. Mainly the X server being used is not acceptable for doing PVR
in a commercial market. If you're selling "dev" HTPC's to mythtv users
then that may be the only good market as we mostly don't care that
things are less than optimal. Any $50.00 DVD player will have better
quality than any Linux HTPC. This will be the case until X supports
real sync notification like that in DX9. Even the matrox g400
framebuffer cards that support "sync" is fake and causes non-smooth
video. Videocards also need to support sync notification. It simply is
not being done well in PC hardware and probably won't be for 1-2 years.
I was considering starting a company selling Linux HTPC's but after
months of research I couldn't bring myself to sell what is currently
available. One day things will change, and thus why many are working on
other parts of a HTPC right now. Yes, there is TIVO, Telly, and all the
others, but I suggest you connect one of those up to a HDTV or projector
and then try watching a film. The irregular motion will be distracting
or give people headaches.
.. In short there simply are to many major Audio/Video problems in Linux
right now to try to create a Linux based HTPC/PVR. I am a Linux user of
9 years and don't use windows, but windows is a much better platform for
HTPC _right now_. In 1-2 years this will not be true. -- And why sell
people something that is inferior unless that is what they truely want?
(Thus why I state selling myth PC's to Linux fans, who know they won't
be getting the best end results is the only market for such a system.)
If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.
