Ooops. Just realised I posted my previous reply to mythtv-dev and not the users
list. Sorry about that guys - my mistake.

One other piece of probably unhelpful information the av_find_stream_info()
seems to be returning AVERROR_UNKNOWN. From a quick glance it looks like there's
only one place in the method that sets this return value.
