[mythtv-users] PVR 350 TV-Out Frame Dropping

Brett,

Thanks for the response, however, I can't find anything in Setup that allows for enabling Hardware 350 decoding.

I've tried running mythsetup and it only allows for setting up the backend for video capture, tv listings, etc.
(menu options General, Capture Cards, Video Sources, Input Connections). The Capture Cards section is set up
as follows:

    Card Type -> MPEG-2 Encoder Card (PVR-250, PVR-350)
    Video Device -> /dev/video0
    VBI Device -> /dev/vbi0
    Audio Device -> /dev/dsp
    Audio Sampling Rate Limit -> (None)
    Default Input -> Tuner0

I even tried setting the Video Device to video16, but that didn't work either. Same problem with frame dropping.

I've gone through the Setup menu of mythfrontend, but found nothing in the playback settings (or any other
settings) that speaks to hardware decoding.

Since I'm fairly new to Myth, am I missing something? Do you have a screen shot of the settings screen that I could
see or could you be more specific?

Thanks again,
Jim

Hi Jim,

It sounds like you are running MythTV on the framebuffer, but aren't using the Hardware decoding. Go into the Setup menu, and select the Playback Setup. The second page allows you to enable Hardware 350 decoding. Make sure that's enabled.

I am new to Linux so please bear with any ignorance that I may display. First off, here is my hardware setup:

ASUS P3V4X Motherboard (VIA Apollo Pro133A Chipset)
Pentium III 1Ghz Processor
384Mb of RAM
STB Velocity 4400 RIVATNT AGP Graphics Card (TV-Out is not being used)
ViewSonic GT775 Monitor
Netgear MA311 802.11b Wireless PCI Adapter
Hauppauge PVR 350
Western Digital WD1200PJ 120G Hard Drive (7200 RPM, 8Mb Buffer)
SoundBlaster Live!
Gentoo Linux (Kernel 2.4.20-gentoo-r6)
KDE 3

I loaded the latest nvidia driver for my graphics card. I installed the latest ivtv alpha release, which supports tv-out for the PVR 350. To compile the driver I had to change the line in ivtv-fb.c that reads "pte_offset(pmd_offset" to "pte_offset_kernel(pmd_offset". I modified the XF86Config file for dual-display as noted in ivtv-fb.c, using the appropriate framebuffer device, which is "/dev/fb0", and the appropriate BusID obtained using "lspci -v", which is "0:10:0". I updated modules.conf as follows:

alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
alias char-major-61 lirc_i2c
options ivtv debug=1
options tuner type=2
options msp3400 once=1 simple=1
options saa7127 pal=0 enable_output=1 output_select=0
add below ivtv msp3400 saa7115 tuner
add above lirc_dev lirc_i2c

I set modules.autoload to load the modules in the following order nvidia, ivtv, ivtv-fb and saa7127. I downloaded and installed MythTV version 0.12, enabling native ALSA (I have the latest drivers installed) and LIRCD support. After booting up the system, I can see KDE on both my monitor and the TV. When I run Myth on my monitor everything runs fine. I can pause live tv, set recordings, record, playback, etc. with no problems. However, when I run Myth on the TV, everything works fine, except that live tv and recording playback drop frames and no sound can be heard. Here is what mythfrontend reports back to me:

  generating cache image for: /usr/share/mythtv/themes/default/blank.png
  connecting to backend server: 127.0.0.1:6543
  Opening OSS audio device '/dev/dsp'.
  Over/underscanning. V: 0.000000, H: 0.000000, XOff: 0, YOff: 0
  ***
  * Couldn't find Xv support, falling back to non-Xv mode.
  * MythTV performance will be much slower since color
  * conversion and scaling will be done in software.
  * Consider upgrading your video card or X server if
  * you would like better performance.
  Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV
  ***
  * Your system is not capable of displaying the
  * full framerate at 720x480 resolution. Frames
  * will be skipped in order to keep the audio and
  * video in sync.
  Changing from WatchingLiveTV to None
  Changing from None to None

Shouldn't the PVR 350 be shouldering the bulk of the video processing? I've heard other's say that all works great for them with respect to PVR 350 TV-Out.

I apologize if I am a bit long-winded, but I wanted to give you as much info as possible to work with. Once again, I am pretty much a newbee when it comes to all of this, so please keep that in mind when responding.

Thanks,
Jim Sager
