Well it doesn't... but read on....

Lirc does not support a transmitter on one serial port and a receiver on a 
second serial port.  It works fine if the tx/rx are on the same port.

So, that means that you need your ir blaster close enough to the cable box to 
control it, but also close enough to your seat so you can use your remote. 
The problem is the the ir blaster seems to only be able to receive from about 
3-4 feet away. See the archives for details. Because of the lower receiving 
range, it's pretty useless.  Basically, the only way I know to work around 
this limitation is to use an IR repeater like the X10 powermid and 
accessories.
