Okay, so it isn't the "kernel was compiled with one compiler, OS
shipped with another, so the nvidia driver wasn't compiled with the
same compiler, which is a bad thing" Fedora Core issue. :)

Well, to the best of my knowledge, depmod only looks at kernel modules.
It could be that it is actually the X driver portion (in
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/ on Red Hat) where the unresolved
symbols are biting you.
