Wow, got a lot of responses on this one :)

I really like this idea:

However, for pure simplicity I'll probably use the sql method mentioned 
(Inuyasha also happens to be on my list).  Perhaps if I get some free time 
I'll look into adding the above functionality as a patch.  I've been 
parsing through the mythtv code in my spare time lately, but am not yet to 
the point where I fully understand enough to start building.
