This is a somewhat lengthy topic, but the short version is: a lot of distros
configure generic SCSI emulation for ATAPI devices, because CD-burning will
only work under Linux through the SCSI emulation layer. SCSI emulation is
also used for USB, Firewire, CF, and other mass storage devices. If you
changed your drives around but didn't change your kernel boot parameters or
module options, that could be why your CD drive now isn't using SCSI
emulation. This is fine, as long as it's not a CD-RW drive that you want to
use to burn CDs.
