I think you forgot to include V4Linux support when you recompiled your kernel. You will either have to recompile the kernel and put support for Video4Linux or get the source for bttv again and recompile that. Yes, you have to recompile Alsa drivers.

Apparently I had to recomplile the kernel to get LIRC to work, which I actually managed to do correctly, but now everything is messed up, bttv appears to be missing, alsas screwed up, I don't even know whats still installed and whats not. My first problem is I get the error "cant locate module bttv" Now I honestly cant remember so far back as to what I did originally so I cant remember how I installed bttv, I thought it was automatically installed. At any rate I cant run xawtv, it says /dev/video0 no device found, how do I get the kernel to re-detect my devices and whatnot?? What actually happened when I recompiled the kernel? Do I need to reinstall alsa and whatnot?

  Any help?

  Thanks
