For MacPorts, I rely on GitHub producing a tarball from a commit hash.  MacPorts mirrors that tarball and it ensures that our build is reproducible.[1]  I could be wrong but I don’t think a subtree would be included in the tarball.  If you are going to test this, please check this out.  Other packagers may also be affected.

OTOH, if the MythTV project wanted to do more frequent releases and produce tarballs, that would allelivate any concern.
