I'm using "mplayer 8940_20071120195900.mpg -lavdopts threads=2"

with that set, I get even usage of both cores

Cpu0 : 67.4%us, 0.7%sy, 0.0%ni, 29.3%id, 2.6%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
Cpu1 : 64.4%us, 0.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 34.9%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st

without the threads=2, playback is the same as with mythtv i.e. one
core hitting 100%

The stream is from BBC's HD channel on DVB-S.
