First, neither plugin is a *backend* function, they are both frontend
plugins as all plugins are. They do not share code and were likely
developed by two different people. What one does is unrelated to the
other. If someone feels that a particular extension could/should be
added to the default installation, I'm sure it would be considered as a
patch, but then, I'm not sure what level of .MOV playback support there
is in mplayer which is the default player so it is likely that many
extensions were left out on purpose so that users could make those
determinations themselves while very common extensions like .avi are
included.
