I'm all for simplifying the setup of and communication between frontends
and backends. DBus does require an XML parser, so it may not be what
you want. Another approach, however, might be to simplify the protocol
that is generating hundreds of messages a second to reduce message passing.

I'm not sure how multicasting video would improve anything. It would
still require that something take care of actually passing the messages
to everyone listening to the multicast address. Considering most
peoples home router will not do that, then it looks like the backend
will have to. Is that more efficient? Furthermore, I do not believe
any class "C" addresses are reserved for multicast.

Supposing this is all possible, most streams are from one backend to one
frontend. Even if there are multiple instances of a single stream,
multicast isn't ideal for streams that are offset, which would generally
be the case. How often are two displays watching the exact same video
sequence? So, I guess I'm saying that I think multicasting isn't a
great solution.

WRT to abstracting the SQL database, I think this would be fantastic,
especially if setup didn't require explicit database configuration.

I will have to agree with Daniel and mention that you forgot to add
"Documenting everything" to your list!

And, of course I'm pumped for QT4. I would like to help with a port of
native win32 frontend binaries so my roommates can use myth on their own
computers.

Thats my two cents.
