Glad you asked.
I'm one of those backwards compatibility wimps you besmirched
yesterday =). We can't guarantee backwards compatibility but
that doesn't mean we can't be forgiving either. If someone
upgraded and found that they'd painted themselves into a corner,
they can at least dump the database after the fact and have the
data to restore from these tables.
That is if restoration was needed at all. Update 1063 contains
11 ADD COLUMNs, 2 CREATE TABLEs and a bunch of INSERTs into
the new tables. Nothing that would prevent the user from going
back to their previous build other than the fact that these tables
had been dropped.
I can empathize with Nigel's concern as I will try peoples patches,
test users' questions concerning recent versions, build dated
CVS to isolate when a bug first appeared, etc. All these are
easier if there are no immediately destructive changes.

Nor do I which is why I think these should go in after the next
release. But in the short term, at least give DVB users a fighting
chance to recover if they run into trouble (even if it isn't
related to new DVB code!). I think this is more forgiving than
destroy data first, ask questions later =).
