No, that is not the point. The frontend is always running on my machines,
that is all that they will ever run. In this case, the screensaver would
never work. (There is already a feature to disable/enable the screensaver
when mythtv is playing a video.)

Yes, I submitted a patch to do this a few months ago. For some reason, it
was not applied.
