 What size images are they now?  How big are the files?

 Certainly scaling them down to the same or close to the same size as 
what would be displayed by your theme would be an improvement if they 
are much larger.

 As well removing the checks for all of the various file formats might 
help, but odds are most of your delay is from the reading in and 
decompression of the images.
