Yeah, since hdtvrecorder doesn't cache the TVCT, and since the
subchannel number as it's stored in the settings now is only referenced
in the TVCT, you're pretty much hosed.  I suppose you could write some
special-purpose fallback hack if you know the PIDs and it's only ever
the one station that malfunctions.

I'd also advise you to do one or both of (a) call WFXT, (b) make a post
at avsforum.com (in this thread:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?threadid=28454&perpage=20&pagenumber=321
) where I've seen Boston-area engineering staff make posts.

Others will have to advise you on this... I do not run ivtv, and my main
Myth box is also still running v4l for HD-3000.
