I actually had a thought the other morning of a way to do this w/o using 
libpcap (and thus would work for other platforms).  I would start a 
videoout thread w/ realtime priority at startup and leave it idle until 
needed.  I think PIP would need its own thread, but that's OK because 
PIP doesn't do video sync anyway (leeches off of the main videoout 
thread).  I'll work this up when I get a chance and send a patch. 
Unless you like this way better.
