Tako,

The opensource Xfree patches make the via driver perform better under X then
the (imho louzy) drivers by Via. Basis for these drivers is the via driver,
but the opensource community patched them to perform better. Also using the
xfree patchset available it contains all adjustments needed for the
opensource libddmpeg file.

As for the libddmpeg driver... Via doesn't release drivers for the gentoo
platform, so I kind of resented that and used Ivor's opensource driver which
(again imho) work just fine. Quality is perfect. Using the via binary
driver, you'd be stuck to the via xfree driver as well afaik. Which
basically makes a up-to-date gentoo system give a faulty image because a lot
of code is outdated and written for older kernels / xfree versions. (Read
stock Redhat stuff)

(off topic) Tako, if you're still having isues with the ivtv driver and
mythtv recordings (absence of sound) ... Try the patchset gentoo has put on
it. (it's basically the work of Hans Verkuil and merged into a gentoo
patchset) .. I haven't had a muted recording since !! :)
