I prefer to let the user decide : there are always exotic formats that you
cannot detect.

In my opinion there are four factors that influence such an algorithm :
1) The aspect ratio of the original video footage
2) The aspect ratio of the broadcasted signal
3) The aspect ratio of the capture device
4) The aspect ratio of the monitoring device
