Nice patch, but couldn't someone try to think more about eliminating 
some of the stretch modes altogether depending on what mode the screen 
is in?

You could also tweak the stretch mode ordering depending on the the 
original aspect ratio was.

In the UK there are a couple of suprises though.  Broadcasters sometimes 
broadcast 4:3 stuff in 16:9 mode with black borders instead of real 4:3 
(but it's rare).  And sometimes you get a 4:3 broadcast with a little 
bit of embedded widescreen which leads to a very small square of picture 
in a sea of black (but mainly an issue for people with widescreen sets) 
- this is usually when you have say the news in 4:3 which cuts to a clip 
in 16:9 (if you see what I mean).
