Well, I just deleted libadjust.so and the CPU usage of the backend while 
doing live tv (720x576 25fps MPEG4 3300Kbps, 44100 Hz unencoded audio) 
went from pegging the CPU at 100% (with the associated dropped frames and 
complaints about not enough free audio buffers which you get when the 
backend hasn't got enough processor power) down to a healthy 60% without 
changing any other settings...  I'd love to know why it used so much more 
CPU for Live TV - the adjust filter didn't seem to have much effect on the 
CPU used when just recording (640x576 25fps MPEG4 2200Kbps, 44100 Hz MP3 
audio).
