This certainly did it.
Thank you so very much.  I thought that I had seen a message that
KDE/Gnome differences were not the culprit.  I might have
misunderstood.  This _was_ it.

Now, onto the fine-tuning.  I won't bother anyone until I've
experimented thoroughly.
