Yes I just checked my mencoder setup, and all i'm using is the command
below to repackage the file. Try using this program. It'll tell you what
codecs you need to view any specific avi file.

This produced a file played the audio only in my windows media player &
divx player. I believe I have all the necessary codecs, any ideas?

Yes. Use mencoder to do it.

mencoder -ovc copy -oac copy

That will essentially repackage the video into an AVI which should be
playable on other machines.
