I don't think you're reading his request correctly. :-/

I think his needs would be met by a widget that would let him add 'The
Dukes of Hazzard' as an 'anytime' recording in the record table.  The
program does not exist in the current listings, but when it does, it
will get recorded.

My ideal solution would allow wildcards in the title and/or subtitle
and/or description, so that the user could record programs with titles
like '%Dukes%' and specifically, the episode like '%Jail%' with the
regular expression '(roadblock|moonshine)' in the description...

This sort of logic could go into the record table quite easily.
