I'm assuming you're using MPEG4 compression, so first, check your 
MPEG4 settings and make sure they are at their defaults:
  maximum quality: 2
  minimum quality: 15
     maximum diff: 3

Next, you might try reducing your resolution even more.  On 
my P-III/866, I record at 352x480 MPEG4, bitrate: 3300 (scaled) 
and use about 70% cpu.  I also do not use that machine for the 
frontend... it's used for the backend only (saving me about 
20% cpu).

What window manager are you using for X?
