Yes, all the newer digital cable boxes have video out(RCA jacks).   But, 
most of the older analog cable boxes only have a antenna jacks.

You can also use a VCR with a "cable mouse", my sony VCR can run my cable 
box and it will give me a video out on my analog cable box.

It would be nice to have mythtv stay on and record every thing from 
channel 3, and then with the external channel changing, we could use a 
older style cable box.  The only problem with this is MythTV would not 
know for sure what channel you were on.  But, it would work for most 
things.

My VCR does this, the only thing I do not like about it is that it always 
says I am on channel 3, Sony could have done better.
